The scale gave me a number… and a full-blown identity crisis

Do you ever step on the scale and suddenly question every life choice you've ever made?
Like one second you’re brushing your teeth, humming a little tune, and the next you’re spiraling into:
“I knew I shouldn’t have had that cheese toast in 2007!”
This happened to me the other morning.I stepped on the scale.
The number blinked.
And I swear, it judged me.
Not with words, no. The scale is silent. But oh, it knows.
It gives you that smug little pause before it flashes the number.
Like it’s saying, “Brace yourself, sweetheart.”
I called it “just data”... and then emotionally unraveled for 20 minutes
Now, I’ve done the work. I coach women on this exact thing.
But in that moment, all logic flew out the window.
I found myself playing the mental greatest hits of unhelpful thoughts:
● “Why is it going UP?”
● “I barely ate anything yesterday…”
● “Maybe the scale’s broken.”
● “Or maybe I’m broken.”
Yep. All that from one number. And then I caught myself.
Because here’s the thing:
That number? It’s not me. It’s not you. It’s just a signpost.
It’s one signal in a sea of signals:
Like how you slept.
Whether you pooped.
What time you ate last.
If you hugged your cat.
We treat it like it’s a report card on our life.
But it’s really more like checking the weather.
Cloudy today? Cool. Take an umbrella.
It doesn’t mean you’re failing as a human.
My favorite trick?
I stopped saying, “I weigh [insert scary number here]…”
Now I say, “There’s a number on the scale today.”
No ownership. No judgment.
Just a fact, like: “There’s traffic on the highway” or “My toast burned again.”
Sometimes I even say:
“My body made a number today.”
Like it’s an art project.
It helps. It reminds me the scale is just a tool.
Like a thermometer.
It shows me where I am. Not WHO I am.
If you’re tired of letting that number ruin your day…
